Responding to a
calling to open their home and life to abandoned, abused and neglected
babies, Christo and Lanie de Klerk opened the doors to the Baby Moses Baby
Sanctuary in May 2003. They added a big baby bedroom, huge playroom,
kitchen and bathroom to the existing building on their property. Members
of the community helped with the furnishing and decorating of the baby
home to make sure that each and every infant was received into a warm and
welcoming homely atmosphere. The property is situated in close
proximity to a large informal settlement, private and state run hospitals,
schools, shops, baby clinic and a 24-hour emergency Medicross Clinic. On
28 April 2003 they received their first baby.
Although he was already 2 months old, he was abandoned by his mother in hospital when he was only a few hours
old. (Because of a shortage in welfare personnel, an already too heavy workload, and alarming numbers of babies being abandoned, some babies can still be in hospitals when they are 1 years old, waiting to be placed at a temporary place of safety.

Surprisingly some facilities have empty beds because of a lack of sufficient social workers to carry the caseloads.)
